The Secondary School Grant is a targeted grant for Year 7 & 8 students only and uses an open competitive process each term. This means applications received by the close date are assessed against criteria and ranked in order of merit. Schools who meet the program goals and program parameters in their grant application may receive funding.
In the application form there are four sections: school details, sport delivery plan, additional support, and summary.
The information below provides advice for completing each section of the application.
School Details
1. You will need to confirm your schools bank and school account information before proceeding.
2. Complete the child safety declaration
3. Confirm that all details in the form above is correct and click 'Next.'
Sport Delivery Plan
In this next section of the application, we want to see your program plan for the term. Think about the program parameters, what sports will help you achieve the program goals and tell us how many participants and sessions you are planning. To help your selection view our sports page to read about which sports might best support you to meet your goals.
Once you have decided on your sport simply select up to three sports to your Sport Delivery Plan.
1. Select 'Add sport to plan.'
2. Enter chosen sport/s, number of participants, number of sessions, and method of delivery (coach or teacher delivered).
Applicants are then required to respond the following questions:
- Which year levels are going to participate in these sports?
- Based on the total students participating, what percentage are female?
- Based on the total students participating, what percentage of students do not meet the daily recommendation of 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity?

Your first step is to review the secondary schools' key goals and plan how your proposed program may meet each of these goals.
Applications received from special schools with secondary school enrolments in Years 7 and/or 8 will be funded as a priority.
If, (as anticipated), remaining total applications exceed the level of available funding, applications from secondary and combined schools will be assessed based on the following criteria:
- Targeting female cohorts (50%) - this will be demonstrated by the percentage of females participating (from 0-100% in 10% increments as provided in the grant application)
- Targeting inactive students (50%) - this will be demonstrated by the percentage of total students who do not meet the daily recommendation of 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity (from 0-100% in 10% increments as provided in the grant application)
To help understand the most successful strategies to spark the motivations and interests of secondary school students, Sport Australia (now Australian Sports Commission) undertook the Youth Participation Project.
As a result, the Australian Sports Commission produced a suite of resources to support sports, schools and the community to develop and deliver effective programs that engage youth through sport to increase their physical activity.
