Eligible applications for primary school funding and secondary school funding will be assessed separately
against the relevant assessment criteria. After your school submits a grant application, it is assessed by Sporting Schools in accordance with the terms and conditions and program parameters.
Primary and secondary school (Years 7 and 8) grants use an open competitive grants process. Primary and secondary school (Years 7 and 8) grants for special schools use a demand driven grants process.
Primary school funding
Applications received from special schools with primary school enrolments (Years P-6) will be funded as a
priority.
If, (as anticipated), remaining total applications exceed the level of available funding, applications from primary and combined schools will be ranked in order of priority for funding, by applying each of the following criteria in order:
- Schools which have received the least number of primary school grants over the past four terms will
be given priority - Schools which have a lower Index of Community Socio-Educational Advantage (ICSEA) value will be
given priority - Schools which as defined by the Accessibility/Remoteness Index of Australia (ARIA+) remoteness
area categories are situated in remote locations will be given priority, followed by schools situated in regional locations and then schools situated in major cities.
Secondary school funding
Applications received from special schools with secondary school enrolments in Years 7 and/or 8 will be
funded as a priority.
If, (as anticipated), remaining total applications exceed the level of available funding, applications from secondary and combined schools will be assessed based on the following criteria:
- Targeting female cohorts (50%) - this will be demonstrated by the percentage of females
participating (from 0-100% in 10% increments as provided in the grant application - Targeting inactive students (50%) - this will be demonstrated by the percentage of total students
who do not meet the daily recommendation of 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity
(from 0-100% in 10% increments as provided in the grant application)
Applications will then be ranked in order of priority for funding, by applying each of the following criteria in order:
- Schools which have a lower Index of Community Socio-Educational Advantage (ICSEA) value will be
given priority - Schools which as defined by the Accessibility/Remoteness Index of Australia (ARIA+) remoteness
area categories are situated in remote locations will be given priority, followed by schools situated in regional locations and then schools situated in major cities.
Outcomes
There are four outcomes from the application assessment process:
- Successful - your application has been approved and you need to book your Sporting Schools program through the new School portal in order to receive the grant payment.
- Withdrawn - your school has notified Sporting Schools that they do not wish to proceed with your application for the term.

Unsuccessful - your application has not been approved due to one of the following reasons:
- Outside parameters: your planned program was outside the program parameters
- Outside ranking: your school was ranked outside the places available for this term
- Declined - your school was successful with a grant application but has since notified Sporting Schools that they do not wish to proceed with the grant for the term
Your school’s nominated contacts should be notified by email about the grant assessment outcome within 10 business days of the application period closing date.
